Spring Cleaning:   How to Get your Home Organized

Do you want to get organized but don't know where to start?   Do you have extra "project" materials like old fence posts, outdated furniture, etc… standing in your way?

This post aims to give you some tips, resources and motivation to get your home organized!

Call or text if we can help.

Be Prepared – It's best to get at least 3 tubs, bins or boxes.    Label one "Keep", the other "Donate" and the last "Toss".    Also have additional labels, garbage bags and Sharpie markers on hand.

Purchase Containers Last  – This is hard, especially in the spring...     Everywhere you look (magazine covers, model homes, stores) there are new, innovative and adorable bins, buckets and baskets.   The biggest mistake you can make is purchasing containers before you have worked thru your things.

Create an Organizational System –  Many professional organizers use the principles in the S.P.A.C.E acronym first written by Julie Morgenstern.    The S.P.A.C.E acronym stands for Sort, Purge, Assign a Home, Containerize, Equalize.   Briefly described below.

S = Sort:   Sort like items, then use categories to determine purpose, importance, etc…   Highlight Duplicates for "Donate" or "Toss" boxes.

P = Purge:   Let it go!   Use your local utility service Spring Clean Up offerings to help you get rid of what you don't need.   Links below per area Cities.

A = Assign a Home:   Determine where a given item or category of items will reside…  drawers, closets, filing cabinets, containers, etc…

C = Containerize:   It's important to be able to find your items once you've put them away, and often using a container can help you with visibility and stacking.

E = Equalize:    Another word for maintain, balance or standardize…   Schedule time each week to maintaining the space as planned and evaluate after 30 days.
